Suriyanar Temple, Thirumangalakudi
Suriyanar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Sun God, Suriyanar. It is located at Suriyanar Kovil, a village in Thirumangalakkudi near Aduthurai, Kumbakonam. The presiding deity is Suriyanar and his consorts are Ushadevi and Pratyusha Devi. Being one of the nine Navagraha temples in Tamil Nadu, it is the only temple which also has separate shrines for the other eight planetary deities, each facing the Sun God. The temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified in the ancient tamil canonical work by the Nayanars.
As per legend, sage Kalava who suffered with leprosy, beseeched Navagrahas to get relieved from the disease. Pleased by his request, the Navagrahas cured him of leprosy. Lord Brahma got furious about the Navagrahas providing boon to humans and hence cursed the nine planets with leprosy and sent them to earth in Velluruku Vanam (white wild flower jungle). The planets worshipped Lord Shiva who then relieved them from their suffering.
The Sun God bestows good health, success and prosperity in one’s life. The unfavourable position of the planets as per one’s birth star can cause adverse planetary effects. Devotees perform parihara at this temple to relieve themselves from the ill effects of the nine planets. Negative effects caused by Sade sati(7½ years Shani), Ashtama Shani, Jenma Shani and other Navagraha doshas are believed to get warded off by worshiping at this temple.
It is advisable to visit Prananathar Mangalambigai Temple before visiting Suriyanar temple, to reap the best benefits of worship.
Pooja Details:
Taking bath in the temple tank and lighting ghee lamps for 12 Sundays is believed to provide relief from Navagraha doshas including pitru dosha, putra dosha, kaalasarpa dosha, problems with eye sight and heart, delays and obstacles in marriage. Wheat, red lotus, red cloth, erukku (Madar Plant) and sweet pongal are some of the offerings to the Lord.
Nadi Pariharam and Homas to the Nine Planets are regularly performed here at this temple. Devotees perform Thulabaram by offering the Lord with wheat, jaggery and harvested grains equivalent to their weight. Devotees pray for child boon by tying up cradles at the temple.
Special homam, Archana and Abhishekam are arranged at the temple during the planetary transit amongst the birth stars.

By Air:
The nearest airport to the temple is Trichy at a distance of 105 km.
By Rail:
The nearest railway station is Aduthurai. The other major railway stations closer to the temple are that of Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai which are at a distance of 15km and 20 km respectively.
By Road:
Adequate bus facilities are available from Mayiladuthurai, Aduthurai, Anaikarai and Thirupananthal to Thirumangalakudi Kaliamman bus stop which is at a walkable distance from the Suryanar temple.
