  • The name of the Mother is Mangalambica.
  • The sacred spring is Mangala Theertham.
  • The Vimana is called as Mangala Vimana.
  • Lord Vinayaka is praised as Mangala Vinayaka.
  • Hence this temple is praised as Pancha Mangala Kshetra.

  • The presiding deity is Suriyanar, the Sun and his consorts Ushadevi and Pratyusha Devi.
  • The temple is one of the few historic temples dedicated to Sun god and is also the only temple in Tamil Nadu which has separate shrines for all the planetary deities and all these eight shrines of the Navagrahas are arranged facing the shrine of Suryanar.
  • The speciality here is Sun God graces with His consorts in wedding form. He is not furious but calm and gracing.
  • It is stated in one of the inscriptions found in the temple that it was built in the reign of Kulottunga Choladeva (AD 1060-1118) and was called Kulottungachola-Marttandalaya.

  • Devotees hold curd rice on Vellerukku leaves between 12-12.30 midday time, offer it as nivedhana to Lord and take part in the pujas in the prakara continuously for 11 Sundays for relief from planetary problems and remedy from all diseases.
  • Worship of Mother Mangalambica for five consecutive Mondays by married women ensure longer lives of their husbands by getting relief from the adverse aspects of the serpent planets Rahu and Ketu and of Sani Bhagwan.The Mangal Sutra thread in the hand of Ambica is offered as Prasad to women awaiting for good marriage proposal.Married women take these threads from Ambica, wear them and leave the used-old threads at Her feet. Doing this, they believe that they will get auspicious married life.
  • Devotees perform abishek to Lord and Mother and offer vastras.

  • It is believed that those who are facing any adverse planetary problems should place their prayers first in Tirumangalakudi Prananatheshwarar temple before proceeding to Suryanar koil.
  • Malefic effects due to Dasa bukthi and gochara will be nullified by worshipping here. Also, obstacles and hardship due to Sade Sathi(7 1⁄2 years long period of Saturn (Shani)), Ashtama Shani and Janma Shani will be resolved by offering worship at the temple for two months.
  • Offerings made to Lord Suriyanar are Wheat and Red colour cloth.
  • Devotees perform a ritual called Nadi Pariharam, Navagraha Homas and Surya Archana. They also perform with sugar pudding (Sarkarai pongal) which is considered very important here. They do abishek and archana to the planets as prescribed. They also offer wheat, jaggery and their farm yields equal to their weight – a ritual called Tulabaram.
  • Pradarshanam procedure is very different from other temples. Here we are supposed to do in anticlockwise direction and then in clockwise direction and there are sign boards in temples to guide the devotees.
