Pallavaneswarar Temple, Poompuhar

Pallavaneswarar temple is an ancient hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The presiding deity is worshipped as Pallavaneswarar and his consort is Soundaryanayaki amman. It is located at Kaviripoompattinam, Poompuhar in Nagapattinam of Tamil Nadu. It is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified in the ancient tamil canonical work by the Nayanars. It is the birth place of saint Pattinathar. Since the river Cauvery enters the sea just near this place, it is called as Kaviri Puhum Pattinam.

As per legend, a couple named Sivanesan and Gnanakamalambigai had a son Thiruvenkadar who was a marine trader. Thiruvenkadar, after several years of marriage, did not have a child. Lord Shiva decided to grace them by being born as Marudavanar to a poor couple who was then advised in their dream to give Marudavanar to Thiruvenkadar for adoption. Marudavanar continued the marine trade of the family that adopted  him.  When once Marudavanar returned from the trade and presented a box to Thiruvenkadar, the latter was disgusted to find the box filled with cow dung cakes instead of wealth and threw it away. Thiruvenkadar then found some writings on the cake which meant “even a broken needle would not accompany the soul during the last journey”. He realized the truth and renounced his family life for Lord Shiva to bless him with salvation. Lord Shiva appeared before him and granted his wish. Known as Pattinathar then as he was born in Kaviripoompattinam, he attained salvation in Thiruvottriyur.

The shrines in the temple include that of Lord Muruga with Valli and Devayanai, West facing Navagrahas, two Chandikeswaras, Mother Durga, Pattinathar, Shani Bhagwan, Bhairavar, Natarajar as in Thillai.

People pray to Lord Pallavaneswarar for wise children and cultivating the trait of renunciation. Special poojas are performed for Pallavaneswarar, Goddess Durga and Pattinathar by the devotees once their wishes are fulfilled.
