Trishund Mayureshwar Ganapathi temple – A Hidden Gem of Pune !!

The Trishund Mayureshwar Ganapathi temple is a beautiful temple located in the center of Pune City in Somwar Peth (On the banks of Nagazari, near Kamala Nehru Hospital). The temple is about 250 years old and its architecture is a mixture of Rajasthani, Malwa and South Indian styles.

This temple is one of the rare Heritage Temple that is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The idol of Lord Ganesha is very unique in this temple because, He is seen with three trunks (Trishund) and six hands, seated on a peacock (Mayureshwar). This is a very rare depiction of Lord Ganesha and hence the name Trishund Mayureshwar Ganapathi.

Trishund Mayureshwar Ganapathi temple is a small and yet architecturally significant temple in Pune that has an irresistible masonry work done in black stone. The temple is highly decorated with the sculptors and the depictions of different real-life and mythological creatures. Another captivating part of this historical temple is the depiction of the events and the political situations that was prevailing at that period of time. One such unique sculpture carved on the Front wall of the temple is a one-horned rhinoceros which is being tied tight with iron chains by the British soldiers. This is a clever depiction of the historical fact that after the battle of Plassey in 1757, the British had captured Bengal and Assam. This temple has survived the most rigorous of time and it is still in remarkably good condition.

Though the temple has so many unique features and is located in the heart of Pune City, it is virtually unknown to most people. However, the Trishund Ganapathi Temple is a hidden gem from the rich history of Pune’s Peshwa Era and is architecturally unique in its own way.
