  • The temple is locally called as Nandu kovil in Tamil language which means crab. It is believed that Yaksha who got cursed by a sage turned into crab and worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple for absolution of his sin. The image of the golden crab above the shivalingam can be seen during abhishekams.
  • The place was originally called as “Aushada Vanam” or forest of medicinal herbs. Lord Shiva was originally called as “Aushadeshwarar”, the Lord of medicine and healing.
