Pataleeswarar Temple is one of the ancient temples in Cuddalore, Tamilnadu and most powerful Siva temple and is one of Devara Padal Petra Sthalams.
There is a belief/myth that by worshiping Lord Shiva here is equal to 16 times worshipping in Kasi, 8 times in Thiruvannamalai and 3 times in Chidambaram.
It is named after the Pathiri Tree and the Puliyur, a tiger-legged saint who obtained absolution in the area.

The pooja to get rid of the bad sins of the past life or the purva janma papa parihara pooja is considered very important and done here in this Pataleeshwar temple, Thirupatripuliyur.
Abishek is offered to the Lord in oil, cosmetic powders, milk, curd, fruit juice, tender coconut, Panchamirtham, sandal, rosewater, sacred ashes.
During the Karthikai month (November-December) on Mondays the abisheks are performed with conch and a bowl called Kalasa. Special abishek is performed for Kalabhairava on new moon days.
Cradles are placed in the temple by those seeking a child.
