Morning
Someshwara temple, Kolar
  • The Someshwara temple situated in Kolar town of Karnataka state is an ornate 14th century Vijayanagara era Dravidian style construction.
  • The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.
  • The base of the temple outer wall (adhishthana) consists of decorative moldings, with friezes of elephants, dwarfs and lions embellishing the upper moldings.

Kolaramma temple, Kolar
  • The Kolaramma temple is thousand years old and built by the Cholas in the South Indian style. Goddess Parvathi is worshipped as Kolaramma by the people of Kolar.
  • Another deity of this temple is Chelamma or the scorpion goddess. People believe that by praying at the Chelamma shrine a person will be guarded from scorpion bites by the deity.
  • Another interesting thing about the temple is the Hundi or the well which is used to collect money offerings from the people, and it is a tradition to at least put one coin into the small opening on the floor of the temple, which apparently is a large hole dug into the earth, one can still hear the clicking sounds of coins accumulated over hundreds of years.

Ganesha Temple, Kurudumale
  • The temple of Kurudumale which has a very big idol of Ganeshais situated in the district of Kolar in the state of Karnataka. It was built by the Vijayanagar kings.
  • Just close to the Kurudmale Ganapathi temple is the Someshwara temple where the principal deity is Lord Shiva. It is interesting to note that this temple has been built out of a single rock.

Ramalingeshwara group of temples, Avani
  • The Ramalingeshwara group of temples is situated in Avani town of the Kolar district, Karnataka state, India, is constructed in the dravida style.
  • According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple is an ornate 10th-century Nolamba dynasty construction which was partially renovated later by the Chola dynasty.
  • According to the ASI, an inscription here dated 399 A.D. refers to it. Later inscriptions call it the "Gaya of the south". Legend has it that Avani was the abode of the Hindu saint Valmiki (author of the epic Ramayana) and that the Hindu god Rama visited Avani during his return to Ayodhya from Lanka. According to the legend, Rama's sons Lava and Kusha were born here on an existing hill (called "Lava-Kusha betta" in native Kannada) a short distance from the temple complex.

Kotilingeshwara temple
  • The Lord Kotilingeshwara Temple is situated in Kammasandra Village in Kolar district, Karnataka State, India.
  • The main attraction of this peaceful retreat, which is surrounded by plush greenery, is a huge Shivalinga. Measuring 108 ft (33 m), this shivalinga is tallest of its kind in the world and accompanying it is a 35 ft (11 m) tall Basava, surrounded by lakhs of small shivalingas spread over an area of 15 acres (61,000 m2).
  • So far, around 100 lakh shivalingas have been installed. The entire project involves the installation of one crore shivalingas of various sizes, hence the name ‘Kotilingeshwara’.
