Sri Adikesava Perumal temple

  • It is one of the 108 Divya desams.
  • Legend says that Lord Adi Kesava Swamy defeated the demon Kesi. The demon's wife prayed to the River Ganges and to River Thamirabarani and created a destruction.But it was in vain and she surrendered to the Lord. Thus, the formation of the rivers made in a circle came to be known as Thiruvattaru.

  • Kanyakumari Temple is one of the 51 Shakti peetha
  • The mythological story of Daksha yaga is considered to be the origin story of Shakti Peethas.It is believed that the back spine area of Sati’s corpse fell here creating the presence of Bhagavathy in the region
  • This is one of the rare temples in India where Devi (Mother Goddess) is worshipped as a child.

Nagaraja temple
  • The name for the town Nagercoil originated from this temple. Once the King of Kalakkad, who was stricken with leprosy, came to the temple on Sunday in the Tamil month of Avani and did penance before the deity. Miraculously, he was cured of the disease, Hence, the king built the present temple in gratitude.
  • Devotees consecreate Naga idols in the temple and offer milk and turmeric powder as a part of their prayers.

Thanumalaya Perumal Temple
  • The Thanumalayan Temple is of importance to both Shaivaite and Vaishnavite sects of Hinduism, as the name Stanumalaya denotes Trimurtis; "Stanu" means Siva; "Mal" means Vishnu; and the "Aya" means Brahma.
  • In the 'Alankara mandapam' adjacent to the Northern corridor there are four large pillars each formed by a group of smaller pillars all carved from a single stone. Two of these large pillars have 33 smaller pillars and the other two 25 each. These are the famous musical pillars. Each of these smaller pillars produce a different musical note when tapped.
  • Anjaneya statue is very big and stands at 22 feet (6.7 m)

  • It was built in 1970 in honour of Swami Vivekananda who is said to have attained enlightenment on the rock.
  • The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters east off mainland of Vavathurai, India's southernmost tip
