Nellaiappar Temple,Tirunelveli
  • Nellaiappar Temple is dedicated to the deity Shiva as Nellaiappar (also called Venuvananathar) represented by the lingam.
  • It is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
  • The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Nelliappar, Natarajar and his consort Kanthimathi being the most prominent.
  • Nellaiappar temple is spread over 14 acres.
  • The gopuram of this temple is 850 feet long and 756 feet wide.
  • Originally, the Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi temples were two independent structures with spaces in between.It was in 1647 that Thiru Vadamalaiappa Pillaiyan, a great devotee of Siva linked the two temples by building the "Chain mandapam" (In Tamil Sangili Mandapam). To the western portion of the chain mandapam is the flower garden.In the centre of the Flower Garden is a square vasantha mandapm with 100 pillars.
  • Tirunelveli also is one of the five places where Lord Shiva is said to have displayed his dance and all these places have stages/ ambalams. While Tirunelveli has the Thaamirai (Copper) Ambalam.

Venkatachalapathy Temple,Krishnapuram
  • Krishnapuram Venkatachalapathy temple (also called Krishnapuram Temple) is dedicated to Vishnu
  • The sanctum houses the image of Venkatachalapathy in standing posture 4 ft (1.2 m) is made of granite sporting four arms.
  • Krishnapuram Venkatachalapathi temple is the alternative to those unable to visit Tirupati to fulfill their prayer commitments.
  • Every statue and idol looks alive and produces a bronze bell sound when tapped.
  • Four daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the ten day annual Vaikunta Ekadasi during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December - January).

  • It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu.
  • The temple is also classified as a Navatirupathi.
  • The temple is one of the Navagraha temples in Vaishnavism, associated with Surya, the Sun god.
  • There are two shrines for the two consorts of Vishnu, Caikunta Nayaki and Chorantha Nayaki, both facing each other.
  • There is another shrine that houses the images of the ten avatars of Vishnu.
  • Rama is seen hugging the monkey king Sugreeva with his right hand and holding his bow in the left and on his left stands Sita.
  • In another pillar he is seen hugging Hanuman with his right hand and Angada seen standing in anjali. A host of monkey warriors standing at the bottom of both the sculptures.

  • ThiruVaragunamangai Perumal Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi.
  • This is one of the “108 Divya desam” and second in the nava thirupathi order.
  • It is for the god moon(chandran).
  • The lord here appeared in answer to the prayer of sage Romesar who performed severe penances for several thousand years.
  • Devotees seek child boon and excellence in academic pursuits.

ThiruPuliangudi Perumal Temple,Thirupuliyankudi
  • ThiruPuliangudi Perumal Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi for the god Budha (Mercury).
  • It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu.
  • The temple has an imposing image of Lord Vishnu, a lotus stalk from the navel of the image emanates the image of Brahma.
  • The feet of the deity can be viewed through the passage.
  • The temple has two prakarams(closed precincts of a temple).
  • The paasurams(poems) dedicated to each of the 9 Divyadesams are chanted in the respective shrines. This is the most important of the festivals in this area, and it draws thousands of visitors.

  • Sri Mayakoothar Temple - Thirukkulandhai, Perunkulam is one of the Nava Tirupathi Temple.
  • This temple is dedicated for Sani Bagawan (Planet Saturn).
  • It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu.
  • Legend, An Asura called Achmasaran fought with the God Vishnu here and Vishnu demolished the asura after dancing on him. As per the Deva’s wish, the god here is called as Maya Koothan. At this temple Garuda (vehicle of Vishnu) is co-located along with Lord Vishnu.

  • Irattai Tirupati Temple ( Tiruttolaivillimangalam)refers to two temples of the Nava Tirupathi.

  • It is referred to as Ketu sthalam, a location for the snake deity, Ketu.
  • The first of the two temples, here enshrines Srinivasan (Devapiran) in a standing posture facing east. This temple has two prakarams.
  • Legend has it that a man and a woman who had been cursed by Kuberan to assume the forms of a measuring scale (Tulai) and a bow (Villi), were relieved of their curse by a sage Atreya Suprabha here, hence the name Tulaivillimangalam.
  • Legend also has it that Indra, Vayu and Varuna worshipped Vishnu here.

  • Thenthiruperai is famous for the Makara Nedunkuzhai Kannan Temple, is one of the Nava Tirupathi.
  • It is one of the the 108 Divya Desams temples of Vishnu.
  • It is the sixth navathirupathi dedicated to sukran(venus).
  • Mother Earth –Bhoomadevi chanted the Ashtakshara Mantra taught to her by Sage Durvasa, performed penance on Lord Perumal. When she came out from the sacred river Tambiraparani after a bath, She got two precious ear rings and came to be known as SriPerai – Thiruperai in Tamil. She offered the two fish shaped ear rings to Perumal on a Panguni Poornima day in March-April, thus Perumal became Nedunguzhai Kannan. Since Mother Bhoomadevi was named Sri Perai, the place also was named Thenthiruperai.

  • Sri Vaithamanidhi Permual Temple(thirukollur) is one of the Nava Tirupathi.
  • This is the eighth temple of Nava thirupathi and is for mars (Sevvai).
  • It is also called as “Kuberasthalam”.
  • Legend,Kubera the lord of wealth lost his prominence due to the curse of Lord Shiva for Kubera's evil glance on Parvathi. When he repented for his sin and sought forgiveness from Shiva and Parvathi, they advised him to do penance at Thirukkolur. After his penance at Thirukkolur, Vaithamanithi perumal blessed him with his original position with the wealth.
  • Perumal is protecting the Nava Nidhi (9 wealths) under His right shoulder.
  • It is believed that people pray here are blessed with great wealth.

Alwarthirunagari Permual Temple,Alwarthirunagari
  • Alwarthirunagari Permual Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi.
  • It is one of the the “108 Divya Desams” temples of Vishnu.
  • It is referred as the Guru sthalam(jupiter).
  • The Moolavar, Aadhinarayanan has very big thirumeni (body) and he came on his own (Suyambu) its not done the Pradhishtai (installed).
  • The feet of the Moolavar comes up inside from the Earth.
  • In this sthalam Lakshmanan (brother of Sri Ramar) did pradhistai (made) himself as "Tamarid tree" and in that tree Emperumaan lives in Bramacharya stage.
  • Once, periyapiratti comes there and asked Narayanan to marry her. At that time, Narayanan converts her as a flower and wear on his body.
  • Legend,Emperumaan, Sriman Narayanan says to Brahma that before producing him, he came to Porunai river and lived there. And said him to keep this temple as "Aadhi temple" (first and main temple) he should worship him. Like this he gives teaches (Ubhadesam) to Brahma as a Guru (Teacher) since, Sriman Narayanan acts as a Guru for Brahma, this sthalam is called "Kurugoor".
