Vaidheeswaran Koil
  • Shiva is worshipped as Vaitheeswaran or the "God of healing" and it is believed that prayers to Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases.
  • It is one of the Navagraha (nine planets) temples associated with the planet Mars (Angaraka).
  • This place ‘Vaitheeswaran Koil’ is also known for palm leaf astrology called Naadi astrology in Tamil.
  • The temple is revered by the Tevaram hymns of 7th-century Saiva nayanars - Tamil saint poets and is also classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam.

  • This is the temple to seek relief from the Karkadaka-Cancer in English and Nandu in Tamil-zodiac sign comprising of three stars-Punarvasu, Poosa and Ayilya. The hole on the body of the Linga created by the Nandu and the scar caused by Indira is still visible.

Vaidhyanathaswamy Temple
  • It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite NayanarsTirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar.
  • Sage Markandeya grants darshan in the temple on Vaikasi Visakam Star day holding a Mazhu-a battle axe-like weapon.Hence, the place is also called as Mazhuvadi.
  • Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthy. The wedding of Nandhi, one of the shivaganas took place here.

  • The planets are believed to influence the horoscope computed based on time of one's birth and subsequently influence the course of life. Each of the planets are believed to move from a star to another during a predefined period and thus sway over an individual's fortunes. The Navagrahas, as per Hindu customs, are believed to provide both good and bad effects for any individual and the bad effects are mitigated by prayers. As in other Navagraha temples, the common worship practises of the devotees include offering of cloth, grains, flowers and jewels specific to the planet deity. Lighting a set of lamps is also commonly followed in the temple.
  • People pray here for remedy from various ailments, boils, pimples and scars. They get the special oil from the temple and apply them on the body. As this is the place where Danvantri Siddha attained Samadhi, people pray here for relief from various ailments.
  • Also the sandal and sacred ash used in the Arthajama puja for Lord Muruga – Lord Selva Muthukumarswami, offered to devotees as Prasad is an effective medicine as experienced by devotees.
  • Devotees offer punugu a cosmetic paste, borneol (pachai Karpooram in Tamil) sandal, lime, rosewater and flowers to Lord Muthukumarswami for the Arthajama puja with milk rice nivedhana.
  • Some devotees perform abishek with sandal and offer sari for Mother Thaiyal Nayaki. For Lord, they perform abishek with rice flour, turmeric powder, cosmetic powders and oil, milk, curd, sacred ash, rose water, green coconut, panchamirtha, lime fruit, honey, sandal etc.
  • Devotees also light Maa Vilakku made of rice flour and ghee, offer mangal sutras and god symbols as a prayer commitment.
  • Devotees also place salt, pepper and mustard and eye symbols made of silver in the Ambica shrine.

            Devotees here follow a strange custom of prayer commitment by doing a ritual with Paadai – generally used for carrying a dead body.The Paadai festival is celebrated in the month of Panguni-March-April. Sick people pray to Amman that they would offer the Padai Kavadi to her after recovery from illness. The patient after recovery shall lie on this Paadai as a dead person accompanied by son and wife. The patient will be brought to the temple. The priest would spill the water on the body. The person would wake up as if from death by the grace of Amman. The belief is that Amman would not let Her devotee die.

  • The presiding deity Vaidhyanathaswamy is also known as Marundheeswar. Those suffering from high temperature offer boiled rice with rasam as nivedhana to Lord Jura Haraharar in the temple.
