As per the Sthala Purana, it was said that the Sage Markandeya came to this place. As a part of his daily pooja routine, he wanted to perform Abishekam to Lord Shiva. But he could not find milk for doing his Abishekam. He prayed to Lord Shiva wholeheartedly and all of a sudden, milk sprang from the ground with Lord Shiva’s blessings. The Sage then performed his pooja happily.

Another version of Sthala Purana says that a Chola King who was ruling this place went on hunting and came to this place to have rest. At that time, he saw a white bird. He then shot an arrow at the bird, but it escaped and went inside the bushes. The king aimed at the bird and shot an arrow again. But this time, he did not see the bird, but he found an anthill hidden inside the bushes. When the king went near the anthill, he felt the smell of milk in that place. He cleared the bushes that were spread on the anthill and he could see that milk sprang out from a spot. He got afraid of the incident and returned to his palace. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and said that He was in that spot in the form of Shiva Linga. The Lord also directed him to build a temple in that place. So the king built a temple in the place of the anthill.

Though there are two versions of Sthala Purana associated with this temple, both of them are related to the fact why the place was named as Tiruppaatrurai due to its association with milk ( Thiru Paal Thurai –  Paal means Milk, Thurai means Place, Hence the name Thiruppaatrurai). Lord Shiva is also known as ‘Paatrurainathar’ as He came from the place where the milk sprang out. The temple was built in the Chola period by the Chola King Parantaka Chola I in the 10th Century. The stone engravings of the Chola King Parantaka Chola I and Vikrama Chola are found in the temple.

Thirupatruthurai4The main deity Lord Shiva graces His devotees as Suyambu Linga and He faces the East. Normally, in many of the temples, Lord Vishnu will be known by the name Adimoola. But here Lord Shiva Is known by this name. 🙂 The Goddess is known as NithyaKalyani. There is a separate shrine for the Goddess and She faces South. She has four hands and is found in the standing posture. It is believed that by worshipping the Goddess facing South would nullify the effect of Lord Yama, the God of Death. So people who have lost their Kid, perform special pooja for the Goddess with Yellow clothes with the hope of getting another kid. This pooja will be normally done on the full moon day (Pournami). Newly wedded couples also perform the pooja for having healthy and wise children.

Other most Historic deities of this temple are Bhikshadanar (Lord Shiva in the form of Supreme Beggar) and Lord Dakshinamoorthy playing the Veena.

This is the choice of the temple for the Uthiram Star natives. It is strongly believed that people who offer their prayers here wholeheartedly would surely get peace, prosperity, wealth and good education.
