Thenupuriswarar Temple, Patteeswaram

Thenupuriswarar Temple is an ancient hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located at Patteeswaram, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is worshipped as Thenupuriswarar and his consort is Nyanambikai (Somakamalambigai). The temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified in the ancient tamil canonical work by the Nayanars.

This temple town Patteeswaram gained its name from Patti, the daughter of holy cow Kamadhenu. Patti had worshipped Lord Shiva at this place. As per legend, Thirugnanasambandar, during his childhood, was on his way to worship the Lord. Lord Shiva was eagerly awaiting his arrival. He arranged for a cool tent made of pearl to protect the child from scorching summer heat on his way. He also requested Nandi to move a little aside so that he could watch his staunch child devotee entering the temple to worship him. Hence one could find the Nandi at this temple present a little aside and not right in front of Lord Shiva in the sanctum sanctorum.
