The Holy Month Of Purattasi – Why it’s considered very sacred?

The Holy Month Of Purattasi – Why it’s considered very sacred?

Each Tamil month is very special and it has its own significance and importance. But Purattasi month is considered very auspicious when compared to other months. Purattasi is the 6th Tamil month and it falls between September and October. It is said that an important celestial occurrence happened in this month and because of that, the month has become so sacred.

Once upon a time, during the month of Purattasi, Lord Vishnu descended to the Earth plane in the human form of Sri Venkateshwara (Lord Tirupati, the Supreme Lord of Wealth) and since then the month of Purattasi is dedicated to him. Lord Venkateshwara is the Protector of the Kali Yuga and can shower wealth, well-being, prosperity, pleasures and spiritual enlightenment blessings upon those who connect powerfully with him.

According to sacred texts, connecting with Vishnu during the Saturdays in the month of Purattasi can minimize any ill-effect or delaying effects of Planet Saturn (Sani). Hence, it is an ideal period to appease both Vishnu and Sani (Saturn) for overall well-being and an affluent life.

Maavilakku on Purattasi Saturdays is one of the important custom followed by the Tamilians. The reason behind this ritual is that the Lord Venkateshwara expects His devotees to be close to him in the hills. But however, that is not possible for everyone. For those who could not travel to Tirupati, hills can light Maavillakku in their home and worship Lord Vishnu by chanting the name of ‘Govinda’. It is believed that the Lord blesses them through the rays of Maavilakku light. Scientifically the carbon emitted through the mixture of rice flour and cow’s ghee will destroy all ill-radiation from the home.

The month of Purattasi is also considered as the auspicious month for offering Tharpanam (special ritual) for our ancestors. It is believed that only during this month our ancestors come to earth and stay here for the first 15 days before New moon and hence those entire 15 days is auspicious for giving Tharpanam or oblations for our ancestors. By performing these rituals we would be twice blessed by our ancestors.
