7 Interesting Facts to know about Avinasiappar Temple – A Paadal Petra Sthalam in Kongu Naadu !!

The Avinasiappar temple located in Avinashi, Tiruppur is the first Paadal Petra Sthalam located in the Kongu Naadu.

Lord Shiva in this temple is a Suyambu Moorthy and is in the form of Shiva Lingam. Vinasam in Sanskrit means Perishable. So, Avinashi means Imperishable. It is strongly believed that Lord Shiva’s Grace to His devotees is the one that cannot be destroyed. The Goddess Parvathi graces Her devotees by the name Karunambigai (The one who showers a lot of Compassion).

As per the legends, Sundaramoorthy Nayanar on his way to Thiruvanchikulam to meet the king Cheraman Peruman is said to have miraculously rescued a boy from the clutches of a crocodile, in the temple pond, Tamaraikkulam. Every year, in remembrance of this incident, the ‘Mudalai Vaai Pillai’ Utsavam is celebrated on the day of Panguni Uththiram in this temple.

The Avinasiappar temple has a close relationship with the Mysore Royal Family. In early days, the king designated for the next throne would go to Kasi, bring the Shiva Lingam from there and perform pooja in this temple.

Lord Brahmma is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva of this temple for over 100 years. Also, the elephant of Lord Indira, Iravatham is said to have worshipped in this temple for twelve years.

The Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated during the month of Chithirai (April – May). The Pathiri Tree is the Holy Tree (Sthala Vruksham) of Avinasiappar temple and it will blossom only during Brahmotsavam festival and not during the other days of the year.

The Ratha (Chariot) festival of Avinasiappar temple is said to be on par with Thiruvarur Ther Thiruvizha.

The temple is believed to have been built during the Chera period in the 8th century. This is the only Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam in Kerala. It is one of the oldest Shiva temples in South India, where Shiva is said to have lived along with his whole family. Sundara Murthi Nayanar reached Kailash by sitting on a white elephant, sent by Lord Shiva on Adi Swathi day (July/August), from this place. Moreover, it is believed that this is the temple where Parasurama, an avatar of Vishnu, worshiped Shiva to expiate his sin of killing his mother Renuka.
