Srivilliputhur Andal Temple – Timings, Poojas, Contact Details
Srivilliputhur Andal temple:
Srivilliputhur Andal temple is an ancient hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Andal. It is located in Srivilliputhur, about 80 km from Madurai. This temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The temple has the 4th tallest Gopuram in the world.
Believed to be the birth place of Periyalvar and his foster daughter, Andal, this temple town holds the credit of being the only place where two Azhwars originated. It is at the garden of this temple that Periyalvar found Andal under a Tulsi plant. As Andal grew up, she helped Periyalvar in preparing garland for Lord Vishnu’s idol. It is during one such day that she started wearing the garland for herself and then handed it over to her father to adorn the deity. Andal gradually developed an interest to marry Lord Vishnu. All these came to the knowledge of Periyalvar only when he noticed Andal with the garland around her neck intended for the Lord. He rebuked her for such an act and stopped the practice. But Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and asked him to dedicate the garland worn by Andal to him daily. Later, Andal is believed to have merged with Lord Ranganatha in Srirangam after their marriage.
