Marundeeswarar Temple, Thiruvanmiyur
Marundeeswarar Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. The presiding deity is Marundeeswarar and his consort is Goddess Thiripurasundari. This temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified in the ancient tamil canonical work by the Nayanars. It is a renowned temple known among the devotees as a divine place of cure.
The temple gained its name since Lord Shiva is believed to have imparted sage Agasthya about the medicinal and curative properties of various herbs that relieve people from illness and diseases. Devotees throng the temple to worship Marundeeswarar with a strong belief of getting relieved from all kinds of ailments.
As per legend, Lord Indra sent the divine cow Kamadenu with Sage Vashishta acknowledeging his penance. Since the cow delayed in performing the milk ablusion on Lord Shiva, the sage angrily cursed Kamadenu to lose its divine power and turn into an ordinary cow. It is then at this temple that Kamadenu regained the divinity by worshipping and performing milk abhishekam on Lord Shiva.
It is also believed that the Lord appeared under the Vanni tree at this temple to shower his blessings on Sage Valmiki who had come to worship Lord Shiva.
Even now, devotees perform milk abhishekam to the Lord and consume Vibuthi(sacred ash) to get cured of illness and relief from sins. They circumambulate the Vanni tree to attain salvage. When the wishes are fulfilled, devotees offer vastras to God and Goddess. Pongal is usually offered to the Lord as Neivedhya.
