Lord Akasapureeshwarar is said to be the authoritative Lord of the Pooradam Nakshathira. As per the Sthala Purana, this is the place that gave birth to the famous Siddhar named Kaduveli Siddhar. (Kaduveli means Open Space). Kaduveli Siddhar performed Tapas here in order to get the Darshan of Lord Shiva. Being satisfied by his penance, the Lord appeared and gifted him with the skills in Siddhis known as Ashta Siddhis (an Art of 8 Branches). Then Kaduveli Siddhar taught the wisdom that he learned to his people. This temple was built by a Chola King some 2000 years before. He named this place as Kaduveli after the Siddhar Kaduveli.

featured 2Of all the Five Elements namely Akash (Space), Vayu (Wind), Agni (Fire), Appu (Water) and Prithvi (Earth), this temple is dedicated to Akash. Hence the name Akasapureeshwarar.  It is also believed that in this temple Nandi moved aside to give way for the Kaduveli Siddhar to have the Darshan of Lord Shiva.

Initially, the temple did not have the idol of the Kaduveli Siddhar. Later the idol was found by itself when the temple was renovated a few years back. The main Goddess of this temple is Sri Mangalambika. Since the Goddess grants Her devotees all the prosperity (Mangalam) and the happiness, she is known by the name, Mangalambikai – Mother of prosperity.

It is believed that all the devas including the Vastu Deva worship the Lord Akasapureeshwarar on the Pooradam Star days. Hence this temple is considered to be auspicious for the people who are born on Pooradam Nakshathira. So people who are born on this Nakshathira visit this temple to get relieved from all their doshas. Those who are facing obstacles in their marriage worship the Lord with the cosmetic powders namely Punugu (Civet) and Javvadu. They also worship by burning the incense powder (Sambirani) smoke. A sweet pudding Kesari is offered as nivedhana to the Lord.
