Ghati Subramanya Temple – A Rare Temple for Sarpa Dosha Parihara

Ghati Subramanya Temple is one of the ancient Hindu temples located in a place called Doddaballapur which is 60km from the city of Bangalore. The uniqueness of this temple is that the main deity Lord Subramanya is found together with the Lord Narasimha in a single stone. A rare Combination Indeed!! It is also an important temple for Sarpa Dosha Parihara.

According to the Sthala Purana, Lord Subramanya did penance inside the caves in these mountain ranges of this area before battling with the demon Tharakasura. He did this strict penance in the form of a serpent (snake). Also, this is the place where Lord Subramanya prayed Lord Narasimha to offer protection for the Naga (snake) Family from the mighty Garuda’s (Eagle) scare. Garuda is considered as the Divine Vehicle of Lord Vishnu and is known for its enmity towards the snake Family. More precisely, Lord Subramanya is also considered as the Lord of Snakes.

In Hindi Ghat means Mountain range and this Subramanya temple is located in the mountain ranges. Hence the name Ghati Subramanya Temple. Moreover, Ghati is considered as the place where Lord Subramanya killed the demon named Ghatikasura.

The temple is 600 years old and it was built by Ghorpade rulers of Sandur who ruled parts of Bellary. It was believed that the rare idol of this temple was a Suyambu and was unearthed by the King with the help of local citizens as per the directions that were given by Lord Subramanya Himself in his Dream.

As said above, the rarity of the main idol of this temple is that both the Lord Subramanya and Lord Narasimha are carved on a single stone (Back to Back). The Lord Subramanya is a Seven Headed Serpent Form (Cobra) facing the East and the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha is found facing the West. A huge mirror is placed in a strategic position to view the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha.
