Erumbeeswarar Temple, Thiruverumbur
Erumbeeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located on a 60-foot high hill at Thiruverumbur, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Erumbeeswarar and his consort is Narunguzhal Nayagi. This temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, glorified in the ancient tamil canonical work by the Nayanars.
As per legend, Devas lost all their wealth and position to a demon named Tharakasura. Lord Brahma advised them to worship Shiva at this place to regain what they had lost. The Devas transformed to ants to escape from the demon’s sight and worshipped Shiva. Since the surface was smooth and slippery, Lord Shiva mercifully transformed himself into an ant hill and tilted his head at this place to enable ants to climb up to worship him and perform poojas.
The gap at the centre of the Linga gives it an appearance of twin Linga known by devotees as Shiva-Shakthi form. Lord Shiva here is a Swayambumurthy. It is in the shape of an ant hill made of sand. Hence no abhishekam is performed. The Lingam is only anointed with oil. Since the ants over the sand Linga consume the food offering kept for the Lord, it is believed that the Lord himself is consuming it.
Devotees visiting the temple get rid of their laziness and become active. Worshipping Erumbeeswarar is believed to neutralise the temper and give relief from hardships in life. Devotees offer vastra and sweet pongal as Neivedhya. Worshipping the deities, Swarnakala Bhairava and Gajalakshmi together at the temple, is believed to bring prosperity in the family and ward off fears.
