The main deity in this temple is Lord Shiva as Swedharanyeshwarar. However the presiding deity is Budhan (Planet Mercury) and hence one of the Navagraha Temples of Tamil Nadu.
Thiruvenkadu, is a reference to the temple in Valmiki’s Ramayana. Therefore it is said that the oldest part of the temple is more than 3000 years old.
The unique feature about this temple is that the image of Lord Shiva has five faces, Easanam, Tatpurusham, Aghoram, Vamadevam and Sadyojatam.
This temple is especially known for its unique incarnate of Lord Shiva called "Agora Murthi".
Thiruvengadu village is also famous for its unique structure of pools in temples. This temple has 3 pools, 3 Gods. It is a belief that one who takes bath in all these pools, will be free from their problems like diseases, delay in marriage, etc.
